Tapioca pearls
The heart of the cup. Quick-cook pearls are the home standard — fresh-made is a weekend project, these are a 5-minute one.
The home-boba workhorse. Quick-cook in ~5 minutes, reliably chewy, and each bag makes about five drinks. If you buy one thing on this page, buy this.
Single-serve packets ready in 25 seconds — pearls already swimming in brown sugar syrup. Costs more per cup, but the speed is unbeatable on a weekday.
Made in Taiwan, vegan, shelf-stable, and the brown-sugar marbling down the glass is the closest you'll get to tiger-stripe shop drinks at home.
Brown sugar syrup
Plain sugar dissolves; brown sugar syrup clings. It's what paints the stripes and gives milk tea its caramel backbone.
Thick, dark, and made for boba — coats pearls properly and swirls into milk without sinking straight to the bottom. Also great in iced coffee.
Solid black sugar you melt down yourself — deeper, smokier flavour than bottled syrup and it keeps forever. A little more effort, a lot more character.
Plenty of solid budget bottles on amazon.ca — look for "for boba/bubble tea" on the label so it's thick enough to stripe the glass.
Tea & brewing
Shop-grade milk tea starts with strong tea — brew it double-strength so the milk doesn't wash it out.
Big stainless basket that gives loose leaves room to open up — the difference between tea-flavoured milk and actual milk tea. Fits most mugs and pots.
Assam is the classic milk-tea base: malty and strong enough to punch through milk and ice. Ceylon works too if you like it brighter.
The base for fruit teas and lighter milk teas. Floral, fragrant, and very forgiving — hard to over-steep into bitterness.
Shake & mix
The shake is not optional — it aerates the tea, chills it fast, and makes the foam. It's also the fun part.
The real deal from shop supply lines — measurement marks up the side and a seal that survives an enthusiastic shake. 700ml is the standard large.
Already own one? It works great. The built-in strainer even holds back tea leaves. Chills faster than plastic, just colder on the hands.
The secret to consistency. Boba ratios are forgiving, but once you find your perfect cup, a scale means you can pour it every single time.
Straws & cups
A normal straw cannot lift a pearl. This is non-negotiable hardware: 12mm wide or the boba stays at the bottom.
Stainless, angled-tip, dishwasher-safe, with a cleaning brush and case. Buy once and never think about straws again.
Double-wall, leakproof, and the proper shop silhouette. Makes the homemade cup feel like the real ritual — and survives a backpack.

Yes, a real sealer film machine — 300–500 cups an hour, which is roughly 299 more than you need. The peel-back top is 100% of the shop experience.
Green tea wants 80°C, black tea wants 100°C, and a temp-control kettle stops you from scorching the delicate stuff. Upgrades all your tea, not just boba.
The purple one. Real shops use powder too — look for ones listing actual taro high in the ingredients for that nutty, vanilla-ish flavour.
